Digital Research Workshop for Gambling and Society

Gambling addiction early detection systems

6th of November 2025,
04:00 pm (UTC+2)
Zoom

In our next research workshop, Prof. Dr. Mark D. Griffiths will share the scientific findings on the key moments, characteristics of harm and measures of a gambling addiction early intervention system. The scientific lecture will be supplemented by a practical presentation of the early gambling addiction detection system from Mindway AI, a company that emerged from a university project. Nicole Dwenger, Solutions Specialist at Mindway AI, will present the system.

Both speakers will then engage in a plenary discussion with the participants of the event.

Organisers of online casino games, online poker and virtual slot machines on the Internet as well as organisers and brokers of sports betting on the Internet are obliged under Section 6i para. 1 sentence 1 GlüStV 2021 to implement a system for the early detection of players at risk of gambling addiction and gambling addiction. The Expert Advisory Board, which advises the Gambling Supervisory Authority (GGL), recently stated on page 38 of the interim report of the federal states on the evaluation pursuant to Section 32 GlüStV 2021 that ‘a concrete and transparent definition of which early intervention measures must be taken by providers at what point in time and at what suspicious moment [is still missing]’.

Prof. Dr. Mark D. Griffiths is an English psychologist who specialises in the field of behavioural addictions, in particular gambling addiction, gaming addiction, internet addiction, sex addiction and work addiction. He is Professor of Behavioural Addiction at Nottingham Trent University and Head of the International Gaming Research Unit.
